Chapter 27

When they arrived at the castle, they were quickly escorted to the king’s chambers. Ravenna watched as the guards lowered Liam onto the bed while the veterinarian ran around the room getting his supplies ready. She felt like she would just get in the way, so she headed toward the door to her own room.

Stay.

Ravenna spun around and saw Liam looking right at her.

Please.

He had finally spoken. How could she not do what he had asked? She sat on a chair near the bed, still out of the way of the veterinarian sewing the stitches.

She could hear him mumbling to himself, “He shouldn’t be alive. It’s near impossible for dogs to kill cougars.”

When he was finished, he shooed everyone out from the room except for the queen. Liam lay still on the bed.

“Your Majesty?”

“Yes?”

“Your prince should recover. However, I need him to stay as still as possible. He’s lost a lot of blood and needs to regain his strength. After three days, he should be able to move around some. But not to the dining hall until after his stitches have been removed.” Ravenna nodded while she tried not to cry at the doctor’s implications. Liam wasn’t strong enough to turn into a human. She wanted to argue with him. Surely magic would allow him to transform unharmed? However, she accepted what he had to say. Tatiana would know more about this sort of thing than a human would, so she didn’t waste her breath.

When the doctor left, she looked over at Liam. He seemed to be asleep, so she made for the door between their rooms again only to hear him shuffle on the bed. Liam looked directly at her and let out a low painful whine. Immediately, she went right to him.

“You shouldn’t be moving!” she said when Liam tried to make room on the bed for her. He looked at her with mournful puppy eyes. Her own eyes filled with tears, and she got onto the bed next to him.

“I’m so sorry,” she cried. Liam just licked the tears off of her cheeks and fell asleep.
